The Story of Mala and Raj

The film begins with Mala, a cheerful and idealistic school teacher who dreams of having a grand love affair and a lavish wedding. One day, she accompanies her friend to disrupt the wedding of her lover, who is marrying someone else. There she meets Raj, who is a friend of the groom. Raj is enraged by Mala's interference and insults her. Mala slaps him in return. Raj vows to take revenge on Mala for humiliating him.

A few days later, Raj finds Mala at her school and brutally rapes her in front of her students. Mala is traumatized and ashamed by the incident. She returns home with the help of her students and informs her family and guardian Kartar Singh (Gulshan Grover), who is a mechanic. Kartar Singh lodges a complaint against Raj with the police. Raj is arrested and brought to court. However, his father Rai Bahadur (Saeed Jaffrey) tries to bribe Kartar Singh to withdraw the case. Kartar Singh refuses to accept any money and demands justice for Mala.
