Cây hoa mai có nhiều đặc điểm nổi bật. Thân cây cao, dáng đứng uy nghi, cành cây khỏe có thể uốn nắn theo ý thích. Lá mai có hình trứng, màu xanh bóng ở mặt trên và hơi vàng ở mặt dưới. Hoa mai thường nở thành chùm từ 3 đến 5 bông, mỗi bông có 5 cánh màu vàng tươi và tỏa hương thơm ngát. Một số giống hoa mai có từ 9 đến 10 cánh, được coi là quý hiếm. Hoa mai có tuổi thọ ngắn, thường nở khoảng 3 ngày rồi tàn.
Theo vườn mai hoàng long thường nở vào dịp Tết Nguyên Đán, mang đến không khí ấm áp và màu sắc tươi vui cho ngày Tết. Sự xuất hiện của hoa mai như báo hiệu mùa xuân đã về, làm cho không khí gia đình trở nên đầm ấm và hạnh phúc hơn.
Hoa mai không chỉ là một loài hoa đẹp mà còn là biểu tượng của văn hóa và tâm hồn người Việt. Khi hoa mai nở rộ, đó là lúc lòng người tràn ngập niềm vui và hân hoan, báo hiệu mùa xuân đang đến. Mỗi dịp Tết, hình ảnh cây mai vàng tươi trong nhà như một lời chúc tốt lành, mang đến sự gắn kết và đoàn kết cho gia đình.
Hoa mai đã trở thành nguồn cảm hứng trong văn học và nghệ thuật Á Đông, và đóng vai trò quan trọng trong đời sống tinh thần của người dân Việt Nam. Không có hoa mai, ngày Tết dường như thiếu đi phần nào sắc xuân, niềm vui và sự phấn khởi.
Mai vàng, một trong những loài hoa kiểng có giá trị kinh tế cao, được trồng phổ biến tại Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh (TP.HCM) và một số tỉnh lân cận. Trong thời gian gần đây, tại một số vườn mai ở TP.HCM và Đồng Nai đã xuất hiện hiện tượng lạ, gây lo ngại cho người trồng. Cụ thể, cây mai có dấu hiệu bất thường, bắt đầu từ giai đoạn lá non chuyển sang màu xanh (giai đoạn trưởng thành), sau đó lá dần mất đi sắc xanh do biến đổi diệp lục tố. Hình ảnh ghi nhận cho thấy lá mai chuyển sang màu vàng và rồi trắng một cách rõ rệt.
Hiện tượng này xảy ra trong khoảng thời gian một tuần, và nếu gặp thời tiết nắng gắt, bề mặt lá sẽ nhanh chóng khô cháy. Hình ảnh ghi lại cho thấy cây mai bị khô cháy lá, dẫn đến tình trạng rụng lá hàng loạt. Đầu cành cũng dần trở nên khô héo. Trong trường hợp cây mai còn khỏe mạnh, sau một thời gian, cây có thể ra đọt non ở những vị trí mà đầu cành chưa bị khô. Tuy nhiên, khi lá gần trưởng thành, các biểu hiện trên lại tái diễn, dẫn đến tình trạng kéo dài này cho đến khi cây suy kiệt và chết.

Theo chia sẻ của Nghệ nhân Nguyễn Văn Hai (hay còn gọi là Hai Riều), một người có hơn 30 năm kinh nghiệm trong việc trồng mai tại Thành phố Thủ Đức, hiện tượng này không phải là mới. Ông nhận định rằng nó đã xuất hiện từ khoảng 7 đến 10 năm trước, nhưng do chỉ xảy ra ở một số cành hoặc vài cây trong vườn, nên ít được chú ý và nghiên cứu. Ông cũng nhận thấy tình trạng tương tự trên nhiều loại cây khác như hoa giấy, hoa dâm bụt, mai chiếu thủy, hoa hồng và cả cây bằng lăng.
Ông Hai Riều cho biết thêm: “Tôi đã theo dõi thực tế và thấy hiện tượng này diễn ra quanh năm trên cây mai. Đặc biệt, nếu dùng thường xuyên các loại kích thích tăng trưởng hoặc bón đạm nhiều để thúc cây sinh trưởng nhanh, cây dễ gặp phải tình trạng này. Ngoài ra, nguồn nước bị ô nhiễm hoặc có hàm lượng chất diệt cỏ cao cũng là một yếu tố tác động dẫn đến hiện tượng này.”
Ông cũng chia sẻ rằng ông đã thử nghiệm nhiều biện pháp và sử dụng nhiều loại thuốc bảo vệ thực vật khác nhau để xử lý. Sau một thời gian dài nghiên cứu (khoảng 7-8 năm), ông nhận thấy thuốc Physan 20 với nồng độ 1ml/lít có hiệu quả tốt, chỉ sau 2-3 lần phun và phun cách nhau 1-2 ngày/lần. Bên cạnh đó, thuốc trừ nấm mang tên Sạch Nấm cũng cho kết quả tương tự.
